Jose Garibay, Municipal Cabinet Coordinator and Sergio Barrios, Municipal Director of International Relationships received the official visit of Tomaž Mencin, Slovenia Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Paraguay. The diplomat paid the visit in the company of his wife, Darja Zorko Mencin, Petra Kežman, third secretary and Daniel Paskvalic, local advisor on economic issues at the Slovenia Embassy in Argentina.
The municipal officers and the diplomat discussed the current political reality of Argentina and Slovenia. Mention was also made to cultural, tourist and economic issues relevant to Rosario and the Central Europe country.

The Slovenian Community in Rosario
Slovenian immigration to Rosario and its region occurred after the First World War. Most immigrants came from northwestern Slovenia, a territory annexed to Italy after the war. Therefore, they came with Italian passports though they were Slovenian citizens.
Emigration was caused by political and economic reasons. Slovenians are known by their tenacity, honesty and especially, their hard work. Many opened brick kilns in the south of the city, along Ovidio Lagos St. Others worked in the port, in the telephone company (Union Telefonica), in the Swift plant or opened their own small stores or workshops.
Despite the distance, they never forgot their Slovenian roots and decided to create their own association, the Slovenian Workers Association, TRIGLAV, after the highest mountain in their country. This Association gave them a meeting place to sing, remember their land, keep their traditions and teach their children and grandchildren the joy of their songs and dances.
