International Association of Educating Cities (AICE)
Introduction
The International Association of Educating Cities is a movement created in November 1990 based on an initiative set forth by the city of Barcelona. The movement allows local governments to link in order to work jointly in initiatives to develop the educating value of urban centres, transforming cities into open schools for the community.
The main purpose is to promote a cooperation network of Latin American cities by fostering initiatives and exchanging formal and non-formal educating experiences. These experiences focus on the comprehensive development of city residents and are managed by local governments, universities or other organizations of the civil society.
Besides, steps are taken to articulate and coordinate the work with the different networks that have been developing in Latin America to intensify exchanges and experiences that can contribute to the strengthening of democracy and to the enhancement of government management skills.
The educating city:
- Undertakes its traditional functions with its sights squarely on the education, promotion and development of all its inhabitants.
- Takes on the political intentionality of granting its interventions with larger educational contents, making the city territory a space for multiple scenarios of shared social learning.
